At that time it was just a small stream. Ngurunderi was looking for his two wives who had run away from him and was following Pondi, the big Murray Cod who had created the twists and turns of the river when sweeping his huge tail from side to side. Ngurunderi was trying to spear Pondi all the way along the journey. Together they formed the Murray River, lakes and landforms and everything in Ngarrindjeri Country. Ngurunderi made the rain that feeds the river and the country. With the rain came the rainbow, which can be seen in this painting. Ngurunderi also made the Ngarrindjeri people, who live along and around the River Murray, lakes, the Coorong region and across to Cape Jervis and the southern regions of what is now Adelaide. Ngurunderi travelled with his family and they also played a part in the creation of Ngarrindjeri country. Ngurunderi taught everyone the lore, dance, song, how to hunt and live and everything they needed to survive in their country. When they reached Lake Alexandrina Nepele, Ngurunderi’s brother in law, helped spear and kill Pondi. Ngurunderi cut Pondi into many pieces, each piece creating a new species of fish that now populates the river system. Ngurunderi never did catch his wives who drowned when crossing to Kangaroo Island, which was still joined to the mainland at that time. At this point Ngurunderi joined the spirit world becoming a star in the Milky Way.

This is a popular dreaming story of a group of sisters being chased through the desert by one man.

* Products come with artist information and art story *

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0290/0957/products/9aca829bed7bba548b7ef0a994d8d7d98c8c44b5.jpg?v=1608641993
canvaspouchwithleatherstrapbytheohudson2
Aboriginal Art Canvas Pouch with Leather Strap by Theo Hudson (2)

These pouches are the perfect clutch to carry your phone, keys, cards and money with a secure quality zip and a removable wrist strap. They are compact and convenient, leaving your hands free. They are made from a heavy duty canvas, 100% cotton and fully lined with a lighter striped cotton canvas.

Size: 11cm x 9cm

ARTIST: Theo Hudson

STORY:

Pikilyi is an important natural spring and water-hole at Mt Doreen Station in the Northern Territory. In the usually dry creek bed are water soakages or naturally occurring wells. Two Jangala men, rainmakers, sang the rain, unleashing a giant storm. It travelled across the country, lightning striking the land. This storm met up with another storm from Wapurtali, to the west. It was picked up by a bird (Kilkilanji, a whistling kite) and carried further west until the load became too heavy for it to bear and it dropped that storm at Purlungyanu, where it created a giant soakage. At Puyurru the bird dug up a giant snake, Wanayarra, the snake carried water with it that created a giant lake, Jillyiumpa. There is an outstation there belonging to Shorty’s family. In this painting Shorty has used curvy lines or straight lines to represent the ngawarra (flood waters) running through the landscape, the small circles are mulju (water soakage), and the bars joining the long lines represent mangkurdu (clouds).

* Products come with artist information and art story *

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0290/0957/products/4bbc06d471b02888df07c350ac1bf704df26f820.jpg?v=1621596510
aboriginalartembroideredvelvetclutchwithwriststrapbydaisybellkulyuru
Aboriginal Art Embroidered Velvet Clutch with Wrist Strap by Daisybell Kulyuru

CROSS-CULTURAL PROJECTS - fine art - fine craft - ethical trade

We work with traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees).

We work with Australian Aboriginal artists from remote communities across Australia, from Arnhem Land to Central and the Western Desert regions, from rural locations and from cities. This story comes from a big hill called Mawurrji, west of Yuendumu and north of Pikilyi (Vaughan Springs). A group of ‘janganpa’ ancestors resided there. Every night they would go out in search of food. Their hunting trips took them to Wirlki and Wanapirdi, where they found ‘pamapardu’ (flying ants). They journeyed on to Ngarlkirdipini looking for water. A Nampijinpa women was living at Mawurrji with her two daughters. She gave her daughters in marriage to a Jupurrurla ‘janganpa’ but later decided to run away with them. The Jupurrurla angrily pursued the woman. He tracked them to Mawurrji where he killed them with a stone axe. Their bodies are now rocks at this place. Warlpiri people perform a young men’s initiation ceremony, which involves the Janganpa Jukurrpa. The Janganpa Jukurrpa belongs to Jakamarra/Jupurrurla men and Nakamarra/Napurrurla women. In Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent this Jukurrpa. ‘Janganpa’ tracks are often represented as ‘E’ shaped figures and concentric circles are used to depict the trees in which the ‘janganpa’ live, and also the sites at Mawurrji.

* Products come with artist information and art story *

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0290/0957/products/d0260cf58c40c4a4e814e0cd4e10ed958c566f28.jpg?v=1624502430
aboriginalartcottonfoldableshoppingbagbyninapuruntatameri
Aboriginal Art Cotton Foldable Shopping Bag by Nina Puruntatameri

Cotton bags that pack up to a convenient neat size, fitting into your handbag or glove box making eco friendly plastic bag free shopping that much easier. The wood can be used to make weapons such as ‘karli’ (boomerangs) and dancing boards for ceremonies. It is also good wood for burning on the fire because rain cannot extinguish burning Wakirlpirri wood. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, particular sites and other elements. The painting illustrates aspects of landscape and culture around that area that was told to Damien by his great-grandmother and great- grandfather. There are women sitting with their children collecting bush potatoes (the mass of red shapes at the bottom of the painting). The women are talking and getting ready for a ceremony. There is one man (wati) sitting down with his waru (spear). The spinifex is dry and so the man is walking around making bushfires. He is a good man, he is undertaking controlled burnings so the spinifex burns up and then good fruits can grow after this. There are several symbols in this painting. The small sun-like symbols represent women’s body painting – these are the images the women are painting on each other as they sit down ready for inma – traditional ceremony. There is a dry creek bed running through the painting (in red and white), and there are cracks in the ground and claypans. They wore men’s and women’s marriage headdresses, and Jampijinpa painted himself with white clay for the ceremony. The two dogs continued running east, before arriving in Warlaku (Ali Curung). Many other dogs were living in Warlaku when they arrived. There were many families of dogs, mothers and fathers and children and uncles all living together. Jampijinpa and Napangardi made a burrow to rest in and started a big family of dogs there. They chose to stay in Warlaku and live with all the other dogs. In this way, the ‘malikijarra Jukurrpa’ (two dogs Dreaming) tells the story of proper conduct in families and marriages.

* Products come with artist information and art story *

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0290/0957/products/0e8ad821994d868b7c77fc4dfae51d84fae94327.jpg?v=1624503212
aboriginalartcottonfoldableshoppingbagbycedricvarcoe
Aboriginal Art Cotton Foldable Shopping Bag by Cedric Varcoe

Cotton bags that pack up to a convenient neat size, fitting into your handbag or glove box making eco friendly plastic bag free shopping that much easier. At that time it was just a small stream. Ngurunderi was looking for his two wives who had run away from him and was following Pondi, the big Murray Cod who had created the twists and turns of the river when sweeping his huge tail from side to side. Ngurunderi was trying to spear Pondi all the way along the journey.Together they formed the Murray River, lakes and landforms and everything in Ngarrindjeri Country. In July 2015 Cedric was given a grant by Arts SA. for professional development and cultural research. With the support of Better World Arts, Cedric pursued an intensive program of studying archived information at the South Australian Museum. He spent time talking to Ngarrindjeri elders and researching his Ngarrindjeri heritage in some depth. During the same time period Cedric undertook some developmental workshops focused on his painting. These workshops provided life drawing, brush techniques and colour theory components, providing tools and knowledge for Cedric to include in the technical sides of his art. The results of these inputs into Cedric’s artistic and cultural development were immediately evident. Cedric continues to develop as an artist.

* Products come with artist information and art story *

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0290/0957/products/e810b6853a3fda3f2eca1e287494d942a87f7f77.jpg?v=1624503286
aboriginalartcottonfoldableshoppingbagbyjosettepapajua
Aboriginal Art Cotton Foldable Shopping Bag by Josette Papajua

Cotton bags that pack up to a convenient neat size, fitting into your handbag or glove box making eco friendly plastic bag free shopping that much easier. It illustrates aspects of landscape and culture that was told to Damien by his great-grandparents. Women sit with children collecting bush potatoes (the red shapes at the top of the painting) and are preparing for inma (ceremony). One man, wati, sits down with his waru (spear). Controlled burnings are taking place as the spinifex is dry, and this means good fruits can grow. The small star-like symbols represent women’s body paint that the women paint on each other for inma. Because of the kaliny-kalinypa found at the site the water there has a sweet taste and lots of people go there to access it. But father Wati Wanampi doesn’t like this and he tells them to go back to their own country. The people leave and the father and son travel to Willuna, where they camp for weeks. When they return to Pukara, they are awoken by a buzzing sound. Minyma Punpunpa (the female flies) are making lots of noise as they buzz around the honey bush. This prompts the father and son to get up to go and collect honey. While they are doing this, a Wati Mututa (black ant) finds the father and son, and spears the son in his side. Eventually he became lonely and howled for Napangardi in the south. She came running to him, and they married each other at Ngarnka. He took the ceremonial dancing sticks, but didn’t return. The rest of the clan hid in the caves to wait out the storm and afterwards, the women went searching for the man but could not find him.
