This story comes from a big hill called Mawurrji, west of Yuendumu and north of Pikilyi (Vaughan Springs). A group of ‘janganpa’ ancestors resided there. Every night they would go out in search of food. Their hunting trips took them to Wirlki and Wanapirdi, where they found ‘pamapardu’ (flying ants). They journeyed on to Ngarlkirdipini looking for water. A Nampijinpa women was living at Mawurrji with her two daughters. She gave her daughters in marriage to a Jupurrurla ‘janganpa’ but later decided to run away with them. The Jupurrurla angrily pursued the woman. He tracked them to Mawurrji where he killed them with a stone axe. Their bodies are now rocks at this place. Warlpiri people perform a young men’s initiation ceremony, which involves the Janganpa Jukurrpa. The Janganpa Jukurrpa belongs to Jakamarra/Jupurrurla men and Nakamarra/Napurrurla women. In Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent this Jukurrpa. ‘Janganpa’ tracks are often represented as ‘E’ shaped figures and concentric circles are used to depict the trees in which the ‘janganpa’ live, and also the sites at Mawurrji.

Artist: Glen Jampijinpa Martin

GARMENT INFO

Organically grown wild bamboo

Loose fit - Large size, most people go down one size

Chest pocket

Bamboo wood-look buttons

COMPOSITION

65% Bamboo Fiber 35% Cotton

PAINTING STORY

Wanakiji Jukurrpa (Bush Tomato Dreaming)

The Wanakiji Jukurrpa (bush tomato [Solanum chippendalei] Dreaming) travels through Yaturlu (near Mount Theo, north of Yuendumu). “Wanakiji” grows in open spinifex country and is a small, prickly plant with purple flowers that bears green fleshy fruit with many small black seeds. The women began their journey at Mina Mina where Karlangu (digging sticks) emerged from the ground. Taking these implements the women travelled east creating Janyinki and other sites. Their journey took them eventually beyond Warlpiri country. In contemporary Warlpiri paintings traditional iconography is used to represent the Jukurrpa, associated sites and other elements. The painting depicts the karlangu and Jintiparnta.

CROSS-CULTURAL PROJECTS - fine art - fine craft - ethical trade

We work with traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees).

We work with Australian Aboriginal artists from remote communities across Australia, from Arnhem Land to Central and the Western Desert regions, from rural locations and from cities. When Wati Nyiru woke, he wondered where the sisters had gone, but he soon was on their trail again, and found them near Canberra. The eldest sister was worried – she knew he was there again, watching the sisters while they camped. The eldest sister was secretly signalling to the sisters that he was nearby, so as to not let Wati Nyiru know she was aware he was there. The man, Wati Nyiru, was singing about how much he wanted the big sister. He did too much dancing, that man, and the sisters ran away. He loved all the girls. The girls kept running. This painting depicts some of the places where the sisters camped.

* Products come with artist information and art story *

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0290/0957/products/f7d5fa11c706ce200c318a882c9969b44b9575de.jpg?v=1592974798
aboriginalartcottonteatowelbyjanemargarettipuamantumirri
Aboriginal Art Cotton Tea Towel by Jane Margaret Tipuamantumirri

FABRIC: 100% Cotton

SIZE: 62.5CM X 42.5CM

ARTIST: Jane Margaret Tipuamantumirri

Art Centre: Munipi Arts

Our printing is a hand process that traditional handicraft workers can adopt, already having a similar skills set. In this way, the malikijarra Jukurrpa (two dogs Dreaming) tells the story of proper conduct in families and marriages.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0290/0957/products/5204bba55040f7db06340476a4589fb06b65ff06.jpg?v=1595851864
canvasbigtotebagbymargarettipuamantumirri
Aboriginal Art Canvas Big Tote Bag by Jane Margaret Tipuamantumirri

Size: 48 x 38cm

Pocket with zipper inside

Artist: Jane Margaret Tipuamantumirri

Art Centre: Munipi Arts

CROSS-CULTURAL PROJECTS - fine art - fine craft - ethical trade

We work with traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees).

We work with Australian Aboriginal artists from remote communities across Australia, from Arnhem Land to Central and the Western Desert regions, from rural locations and from cities.
