Aboriginal Art Cotton Tea Towel by Jeanie A Uluru (2)
CROSS-CULTURAL PROJECTS - fine art - fine craft - ethical trade
We work with traditional artisans from remote regions in Kashmir, Peru, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal (Tibetan refugees).
We work with Australian Aboriginal artists from remote communities across Australia, from Arnhem Land to Central and the Western Desert regions, from rural locations and from cities. Artists own the images used and it is up to them how they can be used.
Artists benefit from royalties paid to them on a monthly basis. Art centres benefit from a substantial profit share paid on their investments.
Artisans benefit by having culturally appropriate opportunities, they are able to supplement rural income by practising age-old traditions in their own homes located in remote beautiful clean villages.
Our printing is a hand process that traditional handicraft workers can adopt, already having a similar skills set. Handicrafts in general are struggling to survive, pushed aside by industrial mass production. People are being displaced from their home villages due to lack of income. Screen printing is both productive and a clean industry that can be practiced on a small scale. We use water based inks. The designs belong to Aboriginal artists, who receive generous royalties on every purchase made.
Jeannie’s story is about the seven sisters who created landforms during the dreamtime. They camped in many places all over Australia, running away from a man called wati (initiated man) Nyiru. Nyiru was in love with the eldest sister and kept chasing the sisters. Nyiru and the sisters created landforms and sacred sights across Australia. Each language group has different chapters of the same story, and different sights and landmarks made by Nyiru and the sisters. Eventually, the sisters fled to the milky way where they can still be seen. The sisters are now the Pleiades and Nyiru is Orion, he is never going to catch them now.
